Recommended Recordings – Recommended Compilations
As part of Our Recommendations, Recommended Recordings and Recommended Recordings-Compilations, we recommend Masters of Memphis Blues, a 4 CD box set from JSP Records.
Masters of Memphis Blues contains the complete early recordings (1928-1935) of important artists like Furry Lewis and Robert Wilkins with selections from the recordings of Gus Cannon and Frank Stokes, as well as lesser known artists like Little Buddy Doyle and Allen Shaw.
The remastering is well done; the sound is very good for recordings of this era.

If you’re interested in some later recordings by Furry Lewis and Reverend Robert Wilkins, our Recommended Recordings include these titles:
Remember Me – by the Reverend Robert Wilkins.
This CD was recorded 1969 and 1970. Reverend Wilkins was in his 70’s when these tracks were recorded but his voice had held up well and his guitar skills were undiminished.
Good Morning Judge by Furry Lewis
This CD on Fat Possum Records contains recordings of Furry Lewis made by George Mitchell in 1962 and 1966.
If you’re in Memphis you might want to pay a visit to Furry Lewis’ grave in Hollywood Cemetery.
