Blues Artists

Tommy Johnson (1896-1956) was one of the most influential Mississippi blues artists of the 1920’s and 1930’s. As just one example of his influence, the band Canned Heat took its name from Tommy Johnson’s Canned Heat Blues.

Tommy Johnson was born in Terry, Mississippi and later moved to Crystal Springs. He recorded for Victor and Paramount Records in 1928 and 1929. The Mississippi Blues Trail marker for Tommy Johnson is in Crystal Springs, Mississippi.
