This marker reads:
“TRUMPET RECORDS – Trumpet Records was the first record company in Mississippi to achieve national stature through its distribution, sales, radio airplay and promotion. Willard and Lillian McMurry launched the label from their retail store, the Record Mart, here at 309 North Farish Street, in 1950, and later converted the back room into a recording studio. The first releases by Mississippi blues legends Sonny Boy Williamson No. 2, Elmore James, and Willie Love appeared on Trumpet in 1951.”

Our Recommendations
If you’re interested in Trumpet Records recordings, our current Recommended Recording for a Trumpet Records collection is Sonny Boy Williamson, Cool, Cool Blues – a 4 CD. 102 track box set from JSP Records.
Although this is marketed as a Sonny Boy Williamson II set, it’s actually a compilation of Trumpet Records releases between 1951-1954 and includes the Sonny Boy Williamson II, Elmore James and Willy Love recordings noted on the Mississippi Blues Trail markers for Trumpet Records, Nelson Street and Turner’s Drug Store.
